How to Give Your Summer Clothes Love in the Winter

IMG_1193.JPG

I feel like I am definitely not the only one when I say that I cannot wait for the weather to get warmer. I feel like every time I go to put an outfit together I end up covering up the details I styled with a larger outer later and in turn making all my outfits look the same.

I have a decent collection on fashionable Winter outerwear in my closet; from heavier utility parkas to wool oversized coats. But I always find that when I style an outfit and then add the final jacket ontop the outfit turns out looking like every outfit I have put together this Season.

I sit and stare at my lighter items and wish how I could just wear those instead of bulking up with a heavy coat to go outside. Don't get me wrong; I live for a perfectly layered outfit but I am just itching to give some love to my Spring/Summer wear.

Recently on my Instagram @aclearthoughtblog I have posted a few flat lay outfit photos that are definitely not Winter appropriate. With these outfits in mind, I tried to style something I would wear in the Spring but give it a Winter warmth and in turn creating a win-win scenario.

IMG_1250.JPG

Trading out the footwear for a similarly styled bootie definitely is a great step towards warming up the outfit. In the outfit below I traded out the open-toed booties (Sirens) for a full bootie (Call It Spring) which gets bonus points for having treads on the bottom.

Adding lighter layers will help style the outfit without making it look bulky. You can always add a  light knit or a cardigan to your outfit that will still show off the layers below. The lighter the layer the more you can add on top!

Don't forget about accessories!  Accessories can definitely come in handy when adding warmth to an outfit. From mittens to scarves or even hats, you can simply add a tiny detail that will make you stand the colder air a tad bit longer.

I am definitely going to try to give more love to my lighter pieces this Winter until the weather warms up and I can style them with fewer layers on top. Who else is fighting the urge to run away to somewhere warm until our weather gets nicer?

OOTD: Greyscaled Spring Look

When getting ready for the day I always check the weather to see how many layers I need to bundle up in. I am always cold so I need to make sure I am prepared by wearing a few layers in case the weather decides to change.

If you know me in real life or follow my other social medias you can tell that I love a good black, white and grey look. I am drawn to wearing those colours and when getting ready for today I challenged myself to create an outfit that was greyscale but also varied in textures to make my outfit have more depth.

I started with my go to favourite jeans from American Eagle. If you haven't tried these you need to seriously go out and get them! They are super soft and very forgiving with the stretch. I  definitely want to invest in other colours and washes!

For shoes I went with my faux leather black booties from Call It Spring. The faux leather texture give more dimension to my legs and makes it look like I am not wearing a head to toe black suit.

For a top I went with this silky black t-shirt buttonup from Forever21. This article has been in my closet for years and I still find I wear it enough to keep it around! This top has the perfect boxy cut that is right on my hip bones but not too tight where it looks sassy. This top is perfect to emphasis my legs and make them look longer!

To add a bit more greyscale into this outfit I went with my black and white knit cardigan from Forever21. This baby helps keep me warm when we experience this awkward middle Spring weather. Its warm enough to wear alone but doesn't make me overheat with how light weight it is. There are few things I find in Forever21 that I love and this is one of them!

I cannot wait for the weather to warm up a bit and start wearing more spring attire...even though I will probably still be rocking the all black look. Let me know what type of OOTD you would like to see next!

Shoe Collection Edit

Recently I took it upon myself to attack my shoe collection and get rid of the pairs that I don't need in my life.

This was the first edit to my shoe collection and possibly the easiest edit to make.

Step One: Get rid of the broken, ugly & dingy shoes

This was pretty easy for me since I had a giant pile of shoes I just never choose to wear. With that said this pile formed.

I got rid of the shoes that I would simply not ever chose to wear again or look like I wore way to much! I want to edit down my shoe collection to only pairs that I would want to wear with all the outfits they would apply to.

The next step for me would be to edit out the shoes that do not really match anything I would wear or the shoes that are just plain uncomfortable! There are still a few pairs that I just should get rid of but I am putting them on a 3 month trial that if I don't find a time to wear them then they must go!

Who would like to see an updated shoe collection? Like this post (down below) so I know you want to see an updated collection!

Spring Wardrobe Wishlist

It is about that time where I update my wardrobe and I bring in new colours and textures that are light and airy for Spring. Before I create this capsule wardrobe I wanted to put together some items that I have been seeing in stores and online that I would love to be a part of my capsule wardrobe: Spring Edition.

I have yet to create a capsule wardrobe in the spring or summer so with that in mind I honestly do not remember what I have packed away that needs to come out and be worn. I feel that I may be lacking in the staple pieces department and want to make sure I am covered that way. The items about are definitely staple items and would work in multiple seasons.

It is still very cold where I live so I do not see myself getting my spring capsule wardrobe together yet but when I do I will be posting about it (naturally).

What is on your wishlist for Spring time?

Lace It Up - Forever21 Haul

I recently did a quick Forever21  shop online looking for something to add some spring life to my closet.

Back in October I cleaned out my closet in hopes of having less clutter and more items I actually love. With that being said, I did get rid of a bunch of spring/summer clothing that have not been touch for over a year. I thought this would be a perfect time to add a few new items in my wardrobe that I will love.

Before opening the package I told myself that if I did not 100% love the items on me then I would not keep it and therefore return the clothing.

Here is a look at what I got;

Lace-Up Romper - Dusty Pink ($29.90)

This romper is beautiful, I love the colour of it and how the sleeves have some lace on them. I do not like how tight the bottoms are.  when I am just standing or walking they fit fine but they feel a little bit too snug compared to how I like my rompers fitting. I like how it looks but not how it feels... you feel me?

Lace-Up Fit & Flare Dress - Blush  ($37.90)

As you can tell this dress is very similar to the romper. I decided to get both items in hopes that I would fall in love with one more than the other and return the other one.

I do love the sleeves on the romper more but I think this dress is easier to wear. I like the fit of the top better on the dress than the romper.

Mesh-Paneled Bikini - White ($22.90 per piece)

I am obviously not going to try this on for the blog but I thought that a picture of it will be good enough. This white bikini is a perfect addition to my bikini collection. I did get rid of a few bikinis from last year and needs some new staple pieces that I would wear religiously.

The only issue I have with this item is how high cut the bottoms are. If you look at the photo you can tell the back isn't much bigger than the front. I do love this bikini but I am still on the fence if I would like to keep it or return it.

Sadly I am going to return the romper and possibly return the bathing suit as I am still on the fence about it. What do you think about these pieces? Do you love the lace-up and/or blush toned trends?

What I Wore: An Outfit Diary

This past weekend I was away on a work trip for three nights and three days. I always find that I pack too many items for the trip (which I still ended up doing this time, but it wasn't as excessive as past times).

Here is a quick look at what I packed for my dressier outfits;

Black Blazer (Forever21), White Peplum top (Dynamite), black & gold belt (Forever21), Olive Sweater (Urban Outfitters), black skinnies (American Eagle), Statement Necklace (Forever21), Clutch (Love Culture), Black Aviators (RayBans), Black boots & Brown boots (Call It Spring), Black bomber (Forever21), Black distressed skinnies (Forever21), Striped dress (Forever21), Watch (Daniel Wellington), White Blouse (Forever21), Beige Sweater (H&M)

The Packing Process

I find that if I try on the outfits that I am wanting to bring and look in the mirror it will help me decide if this is the best option to go with or will I find something better that I would rather bring to wear.

Once I am set on what outfits I am going to bring I always bring an extra sweater or dress incase I decide I want to wear something different that day You want to have the right amount of outfits but you also don't want to feel trapped in what you brought to wear.

Day One:

When we first got there we had some errands to run and a few things to do before we had to get ready for the night. I chose to wear my olive green sweater with my ripped skinnies and my converse shoes. This outfit was comfortable but also kept me warm in the cold weather.

For the night it was more of a casual evening so I went with a denim shirt, statement necklace, same ripped skinnies & brown booties.

Face of the Day:

I kept my makeup simple with just a winged liner and some red lips.

This hotel was horribly dry and not only did my skin pay the price but my hair also became full of static. I find that this is a common issue in most hotels that are older and I always have to add oil or double up on conditioner to keep my hair from freaking out. My skin was okay for the first two days but after that I felt very dry and dull.

Day Two:

This night was the dressier of the two. Even though these nights are dressy we still needed to be about to walk around and do things in our outfits. This is why I am loving the skinnies/booties/blouse combo, it is soo easy to just throw on and not have to worry about how short a skirt is or how my feet will hurt after a few hours in heels. This is definitely my go to outfit combination!

The Outfit:
I went with wearing my Black skinnies, black booties, white blouse and the same statement necklace from the night before.  (My necklace is from HRH Collection)

The more I packed for weekends away the more I find a certain style I feel comfortable in and what I enjoy wearing. Next weekend I have an event I am also going to so look forward to a new post next weekend about what I wore then!

Fall Capsule Update

It has almost been a full two months since I began using my Capsule Wardrobe (fall edition). I enjoy the effortlessness of having a small amount of clothing to choose from while getting ready for a night out or a weekend away. As I have said before, the hardest part about getting ready or packing my bags for a trip is deciding what to bring! This has narrowed my closet down to under 40 items (including shoes and jackets) which includes all items I would wear without a second guess.

Since it is now the last few weeks of the Fall edition to my wardrobe I wanted to give it a quick look over and see what items I haven't utilized at all.

  1. Purple disco pants
  2. Fur sweater
  3. Green sweater dress
  4. Black dress with beige stripes
  5. Black romper

My goal for the next two weeks is to make an effort to wear these pieces before it is time to change over to my Winter Wardrobe. If I find that I am not wearing these I then have to ask myself if I even want to keep these specific items. I know for sure I have got a lot of wear out of my disco pants and that even though I have never worn the black romper I will for sure be wearing it in other seasons! I chose to put the romper in my fall wardrobe to push myself to layer and try to wear a summer item in other seasons.

Hopefully I can keep this mental note of what needs more love in my Capsule and choose to wear these pieces over others.

Updated Wardrobe Declutter: December 2015

I have been in a declutter mood lately, getting rid of anything I have no use for or that take up space in my not so spacious room. Last week I had another decluttering party (by myself!) where I tackled my closet space. I knew that all the clothing that was in my current capsule wardrobe was safe to stay but I had a lot other pieces that have not seen the light of day in a few seasons. When going through my clothing I had to figure out what I love and what I don't.

To start the cleaning process, I pulled out all of the items that I A) have not worn in a really long time, B) Do not like the way they fit, or C) I do not feel like I love the item on me. Once these items were thrown onto my bed in an extremely horrendous pile I sorted through them making one section for things I was for sure not keeping and things that I needed to try on again.

To be honest, 90% of the items were given away to a new home that would give them more love. I only kept things that I liked the fit of and that made me feel good about myself while wearing them. My closet feels half the size of what it used to be but I feel like I know everything in there is something I could wear and feel comfortable in.

Looking back on the process of decluttering I felt very accomplished and pleased about the items I decided to keep. I now have more space in my closet for new things that would complement the current items in my wardrobe. I am looking forward to decluttering my dresser drawers as well as the bins under my bed of seasonal items, but thats for another time.

My Take On A Capsule Wardrobe - Fall 2015

So here I go, being the organization junkie that I am I fell through another black hole of the internets cleanly corners. I somehow stumbled upon the idea of a Capsule Closet, yes like a time capsule. I could go off and explain in detail the reasons as to why someone would want to live this way (living out of a capsule...) but basically all you need to know is:

  1. This wardrobe update will create a minimalistic way to look at how you style the clothing items you currently love
  2. It supposedly cuts outfit planning time in half
  3. As well as creates a palate that lets you interchange the pieces to create totally different outfits

This not only got me excited for its structure but I thought this would be perfect for me! I always spend a good 30 minutes in the shower thinking about what I want to pack when I go to spend the weekend at my boyfriends place.

After a few hours planning out how I am going to make this work I set forth to putting my 2015 Fall Capsule Wardrobe together.

I compiled my clothing and had a good hard look at what I actually wear and what I could live with only utilizing for the next 2 months.  I followed the guidelines as to what works for others and TADA! A fall wardrobe was born!

Here is what my capsule wardrobe is comprised of:

  • 4 pairs of pants: 2 pairs of black skinny jeans from American Eagle & Forever21 (slits on knees), a pair of shiny purple disco pants from American Apparel, & a pair of dark green skinny jeans from the Material Girl line sold at Hudson Bay
  • 1 skirt: I am not a huge skirt fan and rarely wear dresses in the fall and winter months but I added this to my capsule to force myself to wear things I like enough to buy but can't seem to ever let out of my closet! So here its goes; a black faux leather skirt from Forever21
  • 4 dresses;  All of these dresses are from Forever21 I recently went online to purchase a nice bundle of fall dresses. All are in darker colour families with a more modest cut in thicker fabrics to keep me warm.
  • 8 Tops: I tried to keep it as neutral as possible when picking my tops for this wardrobe. I love a good grey scale when it comes to clothing and I wanted to make sure that i included every possible top I would want to layer with. All of the tops are from Forever21 except the navy top H&M and the black and white t-shirts American Eagle
  • 5 knit Sweaters: yes I realize this is a lot of sweaters to have in my wardrobe but I live in them! They are all crew neck style with a higher low detail except for the dark purple towards the back. From front to back: Tan sweater from H&M, Mint Forever21, Dark Green UrbanOutfitters, Purple (this one is not a pullover but actually a very sheer knit that buttons all the way up the front Urban Outfitters, Black Forever21, and lastly the furthest back sweater is an ombre from a tealy/green colour down to white Love Culture
  • 1 Romper: You may be asking yourself why would I ever want to wear a sleeveless shorts romper during the fall in Canada. Don't worry I think the same thing... I wanted to challenge myself to wear something that I could add lots of layers to. For example; I could wear this romper with tights, a cardigan, my leather jacket and my black heels... see I am not soo crazy right? Romper from Forever21
  • 7 Pieces of Outerwear:  I love a good jacket and from the photos you can probably tell that I enjoy dark green a little bit too much! A few weeks ago I was very tempted to get a dark green vest from H&M but opted for the navy blue because I knew that was the right option to go with .... Anyways, All of my jackets and thicker cardigans are from Forever21  except for the green jacket with leather arms (Ardenes)
  • 5 Pairs of Shoes: When it came to picking shoes it was pretty simple. I am not a huge shoe person nor do I like to change up what I wear on my feet so picking shoes was the easiest decision! All of the shoes I picked were from (can you see a pattern) Forever21  except for my white converse sneakers and a pair of black suede booties from Aldo

Now accessories are not added to this list of items so you would think that would be a whole other story of organizing... but to be completely truthful I am not a huge accessory fan! I have 3 purses that I like to use (my large black bag by Kate Spade, a small black crossbody from Forever21 as well as a nude crossbody clutch from Aldo). I also only have a handful on necklaces and bracelets I wear which are all stored together in one handy bag.

Taking a step back and reviewing my new wardrobe I am very interested as to what will happen the next time I am getting ready to go to my boyfriends place (which is tomorrow). I hope this minimizes time to pack as well as gives me enough options that I am not stuck wearing something twice. I do keep essentials at his place which will help me if I do get stuck.

I am looking forward to writing my next post on this topic and showing what I packed in my bag this round!
